Illini's Jamar Smith out for season; Carlwell out of hospital

Freshman center Brian Carlwell, who was also involved in the accident and was hospitalized with a concussion, was released from Carle Foundation Hospital Friday afternoon. He is expected to attend Illinois' home game versus Northwestern on Sunday.

Smith, who also suffered a concussion, was averaging 8.1 points and 1.9 assists.

"It has been mutually agreed upon between myself and Jamar Smith and his family, that he sit out the remainder of this season so that he can focus all of his attention on the physical, emotional, academic and other related issues he will face in the coming weeks," Weber said. "As I said Wednesday, this is a very difficult time for Jamar. Our coaches, players and program will continue to support him as he deals with this situation."

Carlwell is averaging 1.7 points and 1.4 rebounds.

Both players were hurt when their car hit a tree in heavy snow.
