01/31/2010 - Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Toronto Maple Leafs made their second big trade on Sunday, acquiring former Conn Smythe winner Jean-Sebastien Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for goaltender Vesa Toskala and forward Jason Blake.
Giguere had become the odd-man out in Anaheim, which on Saturday had signed goaltender Jonas Hiller to a four-year contract extension.
However, Leafs general manager Brian Burke, who also swung a seven-player deal with Calgary earlier on Sunday, indicated that Giguere -- and his hefty contract that expires after the 2010-11 season -- might not stick around Toronto too long.
"[Hiller] bumped Giggy," Burke stated about how Giguere became available. "That doesn't mean Giggy can't be a great goaltender here, or elsewhere."
Earlier Sunday, the Leafs acquired defenseman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom and defense prospect Keith Aulie from the Flames in exchange for forwards Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and Matt Stajan, as well as defenseman Ian White.
Burke also said the roster shakeup for the worst team in the Eastern Conference probably isn't over.
"We're still open for business," Burke remarked. "We're not done."
With Hiller's emergence, Giguere had appeared in just 20 games for Anaheim this season, posting a record of 4-8-5 with a 3.14 goals-against average.
The 32-year-old Montreal native was selected by the Hartford Whalers with the 13th overall pick of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft and broke in with the club the following season. He was then traded to Calgary and spent one year at the AHL level before appearing in 22 games over two seasons with the Flames.
Giguere then began to blossom during the 2000-01 season after a trade to the Ducks. Two years later he led the upstart Ducks to the Stanley Cup Finals. Although the run came to a close with a seventh-game loss against the New Jersey Devils, his stellar play with five shutouts and a 1.62 GAA in 21 games earned him the playoff MVP award.
In Anaheim's run to the Stanley Cup title in the spring of 2007, Giguere posted a 1.97 GAA. For his playoff career, Giguere has a record of 33-17 in 52 games with a 2.08 GAA.
Giguere has played 477 regular-season games in the NHL and has posted a mark of 214-177-25-36 with a 2.52 GAA and a .913 save percentage.
Toskala, in his third season with Toronto, had a record of 7-12-3 with a 3.66 goals-against average in 26 games for the Leafs. He's also played for San Jose, and owns a career mark of 127-82-5-25 with a 2.77 GAA in 260 games.
Blake was also in his third season with the Leafs and has 10 goals with 16 assists for 26 points in 56 games. He began his NHL career with Los Angeles in 1998-99 and has also played with the New York Islanders, where he scored 40 goals during the 2006-07 season. The 36-year-old veteran combined for just 40 goals in his first two seasons as a Leaf, and for his career has 184 goals and 427 points in 724 NHL games.
