02/03/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Anaheim Ducks will try to post their ninth consecutive win on home ice tonight when they return to the Honda Center to battle the visiting Detroit Red Wings.
The Ducks return to California following a season-long six-game road trip and having salvaged the finale of the swing with a 3-0 victory over the Panthers on Monday. Anaheim won the final two games of the trek to finish 3-3-0.
In his first start since signing a four-year contract extension on Friday, Jonas Hiller turned aside all 33 shots faced for his second shutout of the season and sixth of his career. The performance also came just one day after Anaheim traded its other goaltender Jean-Sebastian Giguere to Toronto for netminder Vesa Toskala and forward Jason Blake.
"I think we played a pretty good road game tonight. [The Panthers] played [the previous] night so we tried to keep the pressure up," Hiller said. "I'm happy with the win. It was a really important two points for us."
Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and an assist, while Teemu Selanne scored in his first game back since suffering a broken jaw versus Boston on January 13. Corey Perry had the other goal and Blake recorded two shots in just four 14 minutes of action in his Ducks debut.
Toskala has yet to join the team due to immigration issues.
Anaheim is 16-8-2 at home this year and is on its longest home winning streak since a franchise-record 10 consecutive wins from February 17-March 26, 2008. The Ducks' current run includes a victory over the Red Wings on January 5, their first versus Detroit this year after losing the first two meetings in Motown.
That victory stopped Anaheim's five-game overall series losing streak and was the fifth in the last seven meetings at Honda Center.
Detroit comes in with a 4-3-4 mark over its last 11 games, but last night's 4-2 win over Western Conference-leading San Jose moved it into a tie with Nashville for the final two playoff spots in the West with 64 points. Anaheim is five back of the two clubs.
The Sharks netted the first two goals of last night's game, but Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary both scored in the first period to tie the game before Derek Meech and Patrick Eaves netted third-period markers to lift the Red Wings.
Jimmy Howard stopped 32 shots in the win and he has turned aside 124 of the last 129 shots he has faced over his last three starts (2-0-1).
Tomas Holmstrom returned to the lineup after missing 13 games with a broken foot and had two assists, but Niklas Kronwall sat out the third period of last night's game with an ankle issue and could miss this contest.
The Red Wings improved to 1-0-1 on a five-game road trip.

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.
