Kings hope to get goaltending on track versus Avalanche

Hockey Betting Lines

04/11/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - If the Kings can't solve their goaltending issues in today's regular-season finale, their first trip to the postseason since 2002 could be a short one.

Los Angeles will try to get on track today when it visits the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center.

The Kings are 3-3-4 over their last 10 games and are coming off a 4-3 shootout setback on Saturday to the Oilers, who are dead last in the NHL in points. Los Angeles' struggles have it seventh in the Western Conference with 99 points, one back of both Detroit and Nashville. The Predators wrapped their regular season on Saturday, while the Red Wings visit the Blackhawks today.

The Kings can still finish anywhere from fifth to seventh in the West. They would need a win today and a loss by Detroit to claim the fifth spot, while a victory by both clubs today would place Los Angeles in sixth, as would a point and a regulation loss by Detroit.

Los Angeles, though, would finish seventh with a regulation loss to Colorado or any type of setback if Detroit earns a point.

Each of the Kings' last four games have gone to a shootout, the first time that has happened in club history. Los Angeles has lost three of those games, with Jonathan Quick in goal for each.

Quick has gone 0-3-3 in eight starts since winning his 39th game of the season back on March 22 versus Colorado. He has been pulled early twice in that span and made just 13 saves on Saturday and also allowed two goals in the shootout. It is unknown if Quick, who set a new club record with his 72nd appearance of the season on Saturday, will start today or if backup Erik Ersberg will get the call.

Los Angeles trailed 3-0 in the third period to Edmonton, but got goals from Dustin Brown, Michal Handzus and Jarret Stoll to force the extra time. Los Angeles outshot Edmonton, 55-16.

"We didn't have the traffic, there was a loose puck there on almost every shot that came to the net and we were not in position to put second or third opportunities back into the net," said Kings head coach Terry Murray.

The Avalanche, who finished last in the Western Conference last season, are locked into the eighth seed, setting up a first-round matchup with either Chicago or San Jose. They have struggled as of late, losing two straight and six of their past eight games after a 5-2 setback to the Blackhawks on Friday.

Darcy Tucker scored and Ryan Stoa scored the first goal of his NHL career, while Peter Budaj allowed four goals on 36 shots.

"I let in some goals tonight that I should have stopped," said Budaj. "Unfortunately it was a tough game. Everyone on their team worked real hard tonight and got some goals and that's what happens when you charge the net like they did."

Paul Stastny notched an assist for his career-high 79th point of the season, surpassing the 78 he had as a rookie in 2006-07. However, rookie center Matt Duchene left Friday's game early due to a torso injury and is doubtful for tonight. He leads all freshman skaters with 24 goals and 55 points, but is only considered day-to-day with his injury.

The Avalanche posted a 4-3 shootout win over the Kings on March 24 to snap a three-game skid to the club. Colorado has won seven of its last 11 over Los Angeles, as well as three of its last four against the Kings at the Pepsi Center.
